Every ship has a battery arrangement for basic power supply. All navigation and communication systems (NavCom) can be supplied by the batteries (DC bus) in case of a loss of the main power system.
However most systems on board of medium to large ships need an operational AC Bus. The AC generators are started with help of the DC bus. Once the generators are running the AC Bus supplies systems like rudder, engine starter, winch systems with power.
